On October 22, 1777, Patriot forces prevailed in the Battle of Red Bank in Gloucester County, which Dr. Janofsky calls “the greatest upset of the American Revolution.” Some 2,000 soldiers strong, the Hessians suffered heavy casualties — approximately 377. The Americans, integrated regiments of Black and white soldiers fighting for freedom side by side, numbered 500.

The battle was a key defense for Americans to delay the British from advancing supplies up the Delaware River to Philadelphia. Then, in 2022, a surprising discovery was made of 15 Hessian soldiers’ remains at the Red Bank Battlefield Park. Join Dr. Janofsky as she describes how she and a multi-disciplinary team have literally been digging into the exciting and remarkable secrets of that long ago, forgotten battle. Dr. Janofsky is the Giordano Fellow in Public History at Rowan University and the co-director of the Red Bank Archaeology Project. She earned her Ph.D. in Early American History and Public History at Temple University. She is also a postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.
